If you are like me, you are NOT giving up Halloween treats without a fight and you shouldn't have to. . . part of what we are all about at Food Dance is just being more mindful in our choices and approaching nutritional changes with moderation.
That being said, there are very EASY things you can do to keep Halloween fun and healthier for yourself and the kiddies.
For the Trick-or-Treaters, try to nix big brand candies full of sugar, preservatives, artificial colors/flavors.
There are quite a few more healthful candy options on the market (sure it is still candy), but with organic ingredients and much less sugar than their counterparts AND quite honestly far more delicious!
Instead of Starbursts try: Torie & Howard Organic Fruit Chews
Instead of Blow Pops or other Suckers try: Yum Earth Organic Pops (they make exclusively allergy friendly candies)
Instead of Haribo Gummy Bears try: Black Forest Organic Gummies
Instead of Mars Chocolates try: OCHO Organic Candy Variety Pack
For Halloween party goers, provide healthier snack options and get kids involved with some fun DIY treats.
Years ago I had put together a number of fun DIY classes for kids to make healthy and fun afterschool snacks. . . here are a couple favorites from our 'Nut Butter and Jelly Jam' that fit right in with a Halloween theme.
Nut Butter Jam Cups
Apple Monsters
Here are a couple more favorite healthy Halloween DIY food options for party-goers, that are easy, festive and yum:
Sourdough Mummy Pizzas - easy to bake right in the toaster oven (425°F approx 8 min)
- slice of sourdough
- pizza sauce
- favorite toppings
- mozzarella strips (string cheese works really well for this to avoid 'cutting slices' for tiny fingers)
- olive slices for eyes
Pretzel Spider Webs / Ghosts / Mummies
- melt white chocolate or dark chocolate
- for webs, layout stick pretzels on parchment and pipe warm melted chocolate in spiral/web design; add candy spider
- for ghosts or mummies, layout twist or grid pretzels on parchment and pipe white chocolate design; add candy eyes
- let cool in fridge a few minutes to set
For yourself, hide the goodies! (out of site, out of mind), create a goal/reward or set qty/time of day alarm.
You don't have to deny yourself every treat just because you have goals to be healthier, change begins with being mindful.
HALLOWEEN SHOULD BE FUN!! Set yourself up for success, give yourself new options and live your best Food Dance Life!
